There are more than 69 million grandparents in the United States. September 9th is Grandparents Day, and a chance to share a healthy meal, within a Mediterranean diet, with your loved ones.
This is a day that represents an opportunity to pay homage to our heritage and honor our lineage. It also a chance for the younger generation to connect with our older relatives to enrich our family with their knowledge and experiences.
A Mediterranean Diet Good Enough for Grandparents
In the American tradition, the best way to bring families together is through a dining experience at a table setting. It is the environment where families and friends can gather to talk and create memories while enjoying a meal.
However, many will find that typical American meals be loaded with sugar, fat, and salt. We think hamburgers, hot dogs, and steaks that could be high in cholesterol. These items consumed together, or separate will make for an extremely unhealthy combination which usually leads to weight gain and other detriments to your health.
The Mediterranean diet, in contrast, is typically high in lean protein, healthy fats, and vitamins and minerals. And because of the health value of the Mediterranean diet, it adds to the enjoyment of being more delicious than the American diet.
This equals happiness for everyone if you know that you and your grandparents are being taken care of physically. Because the Mediterranean diet plan may be willing to try new things and train your body to prefer natural, nutrient-rich foods over processed food that is loaded with saturated fat, you will soon be living a happier, healthier life.
Find Happiness with your Grandparents and Paymon’s Mediterranean
Share a Mediterranean Appetizer
Our famous Athens Garlic Fries are always a hit. If you have a grandparent that wants to start on the sweeter side, we also serve sweet potato fries, that are vegetarian, and with a vegan option if you choose not to get the house-made Brown Sugar Cinnamon butter sauce. These finger food platters are served in two sizes to order so that you can fill your tummy to your heart’s desire.
Go Green with the Mediterranean diet
Paymon’s has several different yummy salads to choose from. The Mediterranean classic is the Tabuli salad that combines chopped parsley, bulgur wheat, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and fresh mint leaves. Tossed with our “house” seasonings, extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon juice. Topped with Greek olives.
When serving these items to our grandparents, you know that salad recipes have leafy greens, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and more. We think if it grows from the ground, it should be healthy for you!
Olive Oil is a Mediterranean Staple
Olive Oil is the healthy alternative to butter and the vegetable oil. And the Greeks love it! Most meals are prepared with extra-virgin olive oil. It’s also popular to dip your bread in olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an excellent appetizer before dinner, too.
It Sounds Fishy… but it’s Good For Grandparents
Fish is essential to the Mediterranean diet. Fish of all types, especially freshwater fish like salmon, are packed with healthy fatty acids. These fatty acids have been shown to boost brain function and support tissues not only in our heart, lungs, but also other organs. We serve a char-grilled fresh, succulent Atlantic salmon filet seasoned with Mediterranean herbs and spices.
Wine improves with age
What would an amazing dinner be without wine? No matter your palatte preference, Paymon’s has a wine to pair with each meal. If you choose red over white, don’t overdo it: The Mayo Clinic recommends “no more than 5 ounces (148 milliliters) of wine daily for women of all ages and men older than age 65 and no more than 10 ounces (296 milliliters) of wine daily for younger men.” We can all “Cheers!” to that!
